The winery has been a family property since 1799, in the middle of the Rheingau, in the middle of Erbach. It has been founded and managed as a classical mixed agricultural farm. The early family generations have not only been cultivating wine, but also other groceries. This changed, when Ludwig Jung took over in 1969. Since his father passed away early, he quickly had to take over responsibility at the age of only 18 years, and transformed the mixed-food business into a sole winery.
The winery has been a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) since 1997.
In 2008, Ludwig's son, Alexander, took over the family run winery.
Jakob Jung stands for the tipicity of Rheingau Rieslings - light, racy, playful with will-integrated, fine acidity
The family follows a traditional winemaking philosophy. The vineyards are cultivated in a natural way with permanent cover crop, no herbicides and minimised plant protection. After gentle pressing and cooled, aroma-preserving fermentation, the Riesling wines are stored for a long time on the fine yeast in stainless steel tanks to obtain more fruit, fullness and extract. After a long maturing process, the predominantly dry and semi-dry Rieslings are bottled in summer. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays mature in traditional large wooden barrels or in barriques until shortly before the new harvest.
The vineyards cover ten hectares of vineyards in the single vineyard sites Hohenrain, Marcobrunn, Michelmark, Siegelsberg and Steinmorgen (Erbach), as well as Sandgrub (Kiedrich). They are planted with the varieties Riesling (82%), Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.
The name Siegelsberg is said to be created by a certificate, meaning by "letter and seal“. This southward situated hill with a fall of 15% is located 100 meters above sea level. The vines blossom very early because of the optimal solar irradiation. The results are perfectly matured grapes.
The soil offers layers of clay, laid over with profound loess loam, and what distincts it is the Rhine schist found in the subsoil
The result is clear, salty wines with a unique length and a distinctive mature Siegelsberg-acidity
The location Hohenrain is firstly mentioned in 1519 as "Wingart des Reyngen“. In 1543 it makes history as "hohenreine“. The expression "rain“ describes the hillside at the end of a plot. "Hohenrain“ therefore describes the vineyards located next to the higher situated vineyards belonging to the neighbour community Kiedrich.
Hohenrain is located southwards directly above the old town centre of Erbach. Its s slightly inclining hills allows this location to be illuminated by the sun until early evening. Additionally, on the west side, it is protected by a wall of 3 meters height against a strong cold wind. The wall also serves as a heat reservoir. This microclimate is complemented ideally by a terroir with deep loess loam and tertiary marly soil with an optimal supply of water.
Steinmorgen, or "one morning" is a small stony location named because it's so small it could be completely worked upon in just one morning. The loess loam terroir of this location is strongly cranced with pebble stones.
Wines produced here have a strong acidic & mineral core, with vibrating tension on the palate
Michelmark is located at the northern end of Erbach, in direction of Kiedrich. The name derived from the Old High German word „michil“ or rather Middle High German word „michel“ for „large property“.
Wines produced here carry exotic fruity aromas & complex structures
